Philosophy of Advanced Practice Nursing: Leadership/Management

A key characteristic, vital to the heart of nursing, is a spirit of caring.   Nurses demonstrate care for their patient’s lives, regardless of culture, religion, gender, race or socio-economic status and deliver it competently and effectively.  The innate ability to care contributes to health promotion and restoration of the patient (both physically and mentally) and also lessens the grief associated at the end of life.   Nursing care extends to the patient’s significant others who are crucial to the patient’s continuum of healthcare.

As an Advanced Practice Nurse with a focus in Leadership and Management I hold myself and my colleagues to a high standard of care, asserting we maintain awareness of health issues that affect the patient while enabling them to make better choices about their own health care.  By doing so, I have the opportunity to impact many patients at one time.

Advanced Practice Nurses foster the framework designed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).   This structure promotes visionary leadership, supported by professional and evidence base practice maintaining quality and safety standards and improvements that values nursing structure.  Advanced Practice Nurses are differentiated by their continued education beyond basic nursing education. They have certification that reflects advanced practice and usually practice independently or in collaboration with physicians.

The obligations of Advanced Practice Nurses are numerous regarding activities in politics ascertaining visibility and contribution to the community on a local and global scale.  Finding our voice to assist governing bodies understand what it is we do and how we contribute to society is the only way needed changes in practice will occur.   We are the pebble that causes the ripple on the water extending to all areas we can affect.  As an Advanced Practice Nurse in Nursing Leadership and Management I will uphold the Nursing Code of Ethics and serve with compassion, promoting justice, ethical leadership and continue the advance of nursing practice through education. Through leadership I will demonstrate how to stand and deliver patient advocacy even when the forces around are dictating otherwise.
